THE FORBIDDEN CITY

While on tour in Beijing, we visited the "forbidden city" where only the Emperor and his family were able to go. The gate is accross the street from Tianaman Square. The first pic is the entry, then the bridge going in. The large pots were used to store water in for the eventuality of a fire. The huge marble walkway in the middle of the stairs is for only the emperor to walk on, and is constructed from one piece of marble. It was moved into place by pouring water on the ground (in the winter), letting it freeze, and then sliding the stone!!! We are standing in the courtyard of the conqubine housing.
